Flying Lotus is a name that came to my attention when I found out that he was doing the bumper music for Adult Swim on the Cartoon Network. This is from his first full length on Warp and it is a really good CD. I wish I could do bumpers for Adult Swim.
What can be said about Venetian Snares that hasn't already been said? Deconstructing the break beat to the nth degree, Mr Funk releases another CD of hyper programmed greatness. And I am here to bring you a track. Grouper is a Polish act that used to be more abraxively noisey if I am remembering correctly. This newer CD (on the immaculate label Type) falls squarely in the 4AD sounds. Beautiful murkiness. I picked up on {{{Sunset}}} just a couple of months ago. I loved their last CD and this new one really delivers. Great individualistic stuff that still sounds like Austin. Bones of Seabirds I discovered through the always helpful Aquarius new release list. Metal Drones in the style of Sunn0))) or Nadja, but with a bit of his own stamp on it. Good CD-R release that needs someone like Hydra Head to snap up his next release. The flashback track this week is by Elektro4 from this great CD he put out a few years ago called Keystroke One. This guy never bubbled up like he should. The CD was obviously influenced by DJ Shadow, but he definitely had a much different pallette that he utilizes amazingly well, without seeming as derivative as some of the other Shadowites. He says he has new stuff coming down, but if you can find K1, you really need to pick it up. Burning Star Core is the noise project of violinist Spencer Yeh. This new CD, Challenger, continues to expand his sound. I have to see him live. I discovered Grails a few years ago with their CD Burning Off Impurities. They continue to refine their methods and this new CD on Important is their best yet, as evidenced by this psychedelic stomp that opens the CD. Ficcara Picchu is a four track solo project and I know little about in besides that. This is an EP released on Beta Lactam and Aquarius raved the new full length. The EP was on emusic, so it is what you get here. Eden Express is on Holy Mountain, a label known for its psychedelic stomp and the group features on of the noisesmiths from Cloudland Canyon. This is a really different release coming from those sources, almost fever dream psychedelia. Interesting release. Aquarius called Ondo "cinematic abstract free noise drone music" and that fits perfectly. This CD is released on the always respectable label Paradigms and well worth your listen. |
