I feel like there is a layer of fuzz just laid down on top of this whole set. Lots of ambience.
Starting with a live track by Daedalus. Daedalus performed at the LA space Low End Theory, mixing up his past compositions with some noisy play and new tracks carved out of the atmosphere. This whole CD is a testament to how free and loose an electronic show can be. So many electronic performances could be done by hitting play on a sequencer and having a smoke. Aphex Twin has played things more fast and loose and Atom Heart is notorious for his improv sets, but Daedalus brings it on this recording showing how artists can play with structure and form. And then things go to hell with the merciless buzz of Birchville Cat Motel. Campbell Kneal's signature noise project takes a more brutal turn on his latest release, this time on the excellent American Indie Important Records instead of his own New Zealand based Celebrate Psi Phenomenon. Matt Bower of Skullflower/Sunroof! pedigree joins him on this release turning up the brutality a notch. Isan is a primarily electronic act that put together great soundscape material that actually move and progress rather than degenerate into navel gazing. There latest release "Plans Drawn in Pencil" drew me in, so when I found this collection of obscurities they had released, Clockwork Menagerie, I had to pick it up. The Depreciation Guild are two musicians and their NES composed rhythms. Musically they are very shoegazer with a big wall of sound over the blips and farts coming from the 8 bit drummer. Their CD is available a couple of places for purchase and is also available as a fee download from their website. Pitchfork loved it and so do I. I play too much Earthmonkey I fear. But when tracks keep coming up during a shuffle, I feel the Ghost of Burroughs is cutting things up the way they should be for the show. This track reminds me of a lot of the TAGC faux jazz tracks. Gown is a project I was unfamiliar with. I heard that Gown had released a piece of vinyl that featured the Sunburned Hand of the Man as the backing band and I went on the hunt. Blues Rock from a world where Beefheart was bigger than Zepplin. This is the shortest track on the LP (which also comes with a CD of the tracks) and just a glimpse of some of the insanity in the longer tracks. Mahjongg is more of a collective than a band. They take tribal sounds and do strange things to them. It is really a stranger CD than this one track would illustrate. From traditional tribal sounds like are featured on this track to more urban tribal sounds, these guys are definitely not locked down into an individual sound. Japan's LSD March came to the states and did a couple of nights worth of shows with the band Bardo Pond. This double CD comes from the shows and it stomps. Headspinning craziness that I think is greater than the sum of its parts. I love these two CDs more than all of the LSD March or Bardo Pond I have heard. Growing is an excellent duo of guitarists with pedals. That is definitely an oversimplification of their methodology, but from that basis they contnue to produce amazing CDs of washes of pulsing noise. The more these guys go on, their sound just continues to evolve and refine. They have gone from Kranky to Megablade and now are on Social Register. Speaking of Kranky, one of my favorite bands on Kranky is Deerhunter. Atlas Sound is a side project of that group and has an amazing new CD out. A combination of fuzzy pop songs and hazy melodic stuff that sounds like Fennesz sort of material. This title track is one of my favorites from the new CD. Nadja is one of the many projects of Aidan Baker. It is one of the more metal based projects, and basically sounds like Jesu instrumentals, but murkier. It is hard to top Nadja when they are on and this ten minute show closer is an example of when they are on. |
