The past couple of shows have been pretty chaotic noisy affairs. There are some big helpings of Electro Grandiosity to act as a chaser after the past couple of episodes, soothing things out.
Telephone Jim Jesus is on the bizarro hip hop label Anticon and they fit him like a glove. He makes the noisy (mostly) instrumental hip hop a lot of other Anticon artists make but seems to have bit more electro take on it than many. The title of the CD is a rip on Baudelaire and that in itself speaks to the intelligent take on hip hop that comes from Anticon. TJJ has other releases I haven't heard yet, but I need to dig up. Morgan Packard has a background in both Jazz and classical compositition. His latest CD got an excellent review on Tiny Mix Tapes, so I snagged it off of emusic. The physical version of this apparently is packaged with a DVD, but I just picked up the tunes. And the music is really great. There is a faux simplicity to them that covers come very complex arrangements upon close listening. This title track from the CD has some great accordian scattered through the gently and slowly pulsing electro. When choosing a track for the show, this is the one I kept coming back too. Once again I reach out to my favorite Finnish Krautrock/Prog band, Circle. Prolific does not begin to describe these guys (I think Aquarius could cede a whole corner of the store to them) and every CD has a different touch. The CD Katapult is on No Quarter, a label known for some amazing experimental bands like Psychic Paramount. Katapult has shorter songs than many CDs in the Circle catalog and this piece of stereo separated wierdness is great for the headphones. I program this show for listening on personal music players and this one sounds great that way. Kim Hiorthoy is primarily a Norwegian visual artist, doing many cover pieces for bands, especially those on the Scandanavian label Rune Grammophon. I had not heard his music until I got this latest CD of his. The CD reminds me of the big majestic electro M83 is known for. I love when artists can bring their creative vision to multiple media and the lush and almost abstract beauty that he brings to his visual art is apparent here. The CD is well worth the listen. Jed Speare is another artists whose work spreads across many media. He is trained in composition, but also creates performance works, video and film. He has been creating music concrete stil noise for decades now and Family Vineyard assembled several long form tracks on a two CD set. I do mean long form tracks as the six minute track I play in the show is about a quarter of the length of the other 20 minute tracks on the CD. Great found sound and rhythmic composition on all of these tracks. Loden is another act in the stable of the amazing Mush Records. Hailing from the Belgium/Netherlands music scene, Loden also brings it with the M83/film score sort of sound. I am really a sucker for this CD, lush, psychedelic and compelling. This CD is a couple of years old at this point and I m anxiously awaiting more material from him. I think the Faunts are a great band, delivering a band's take on more spacious ambient music. They remind me of Port Royal, except not quite as slicked up. They have a new CD on the horizon, so I picked up this EP I was missing off of emusic and I am glad I did. I have been told the new full length should be out by the Summer, so look to hear that in the future. Ignatz is an amazing act that combines the noise I love with sort of an acoustic drone. I have the releases that he has come out with before and listener Jeff from the Bay Area asked me if I had heard the Ignatz cassette he had picked up. Released on the cassette label Bennifer Editions, it comes in some great oversized packaging with extensive art work. I emailed Bennifer and asked if I could play it, especially considering the fact I don't own it in any way shape or form and he was more than gracious about it. Blues Control is an amazing New York based act that takes rock conventions and twists and stretches the form into a dreamlike haze. Their Holy Mountain self titled CD, as was the mini LP Puff. There is about to be a CD reissue of Puff that I highly recommend everyone pick up. Richard Youngs and Simon Wickham-Smith have a stack of collaborations they have done over the years. Apparently in 2000 they resolved to collaborating on a single ten minute track every year, . The first result is the CD Five Years. It will be 2010 before we see the next one, but if its as good as this CD it will be worth the wait. |
