The shows are seeming to take a venture into a more noise rock direction in the last couple of episodes. I hope to mix it up a little more in the future, feature a little more electronic and ambient things, with a dash more retro.
If you missed the 2007 retrospective, look in your feed (you must be a subscriber!!) and it will be the show immediately before the current one. Two hours of tracks from all of 2007. Listen to the post show of this episode to find out how to win a Menomena CD. I have a Jazkamer CD that I think is really good and Smegma is sort of legendary in the avant underground. When I saw their collaborative CD reviewed online I immediately headed to emusic and found it. The CD is a chaotic mess, but I mean that in the best possible way. Really drone based with lots of touches of demented musicality perking up from the murk. Geronimo has the Aquarius release of the week, so I went to emusic and searched for it. I was really pleased. This is one of the shorter songs on the CD, but when they open up it really gets expansive and amazing. Apparently they opened for Circle and Sunn0))) in LA and that is a perfect fit for them, a great mix of musical abstractions and bombast. Es is the project of Sami of Fonal records. Listening to the CD you can feel the Fonal aesthetic sense creeping through: the combination of noise, electronics, ambience and traditional instrumentation. This is an amazing release. I don't know much about Times New Viking, but the CD is a freaking noisy slap of retro noise. Its like the Nuggets box through a distortion pedal, on a faster speed. Really awesome. Random Touch is a name I have heard batted around a bit, but didn't know much about. I saw the Alchemy CD and picked it up on a lark. It is really good and apparently just one of many releases. The CD is really good, with avant and underground influences from many eras are everywhere, but in their own unique bent. They have offered to send me their new release so look forward to hearing these guys on the show in the future. Astro Can Caravan is another Finnish band. I guess being cooped up in the frozen north several months in the year leads to some amazing music. ACC is very jazz based, but on the noisier more discordant side of things. Both CDs have been hard to find for me, so if you see them grab them. Rockford Kabine was another Aquarius pick of the week. When I saw the subtitle called it Invalid Movie themes, I knew this was right up my alley. I haven't done an Aquarius order in a while, so I had to find this on my own. The tracks are generally shorter than I like to play, fitting with the “Themes” part of the title. But this CD is amazingly good and I am very anxious to find their older releases. The Flower-Corsano Duo is part of the collective of musicians that include Cold Bleak Heat that I played a couple of shows ago. I have never been disappointed by music I have heard from these guys. I played the CBH with the permission of Family Vineyard, but Chris Corsano is very hip to me playing their stuff, so look to hear more in the future. Ultralyd is one of the projects of the N-Collective, a group of Scandanavian artists that apparently collaborate on a myriad of projects. Ultralyd is another project I discovered on Tiny Mix Tapes. It is released by Rune Grammophon which is a recommendation just by itself. This is sort of chaotic free jazz sort of stuff, but reigned in with a little bit of restraint. Really great release. I have played Pedro stuff before, usually nice trippy electro. His latest CD is on Mush but has a very Planet Mu sound. It is big and bombastic and chaotic. I really love the direction he is going and hope he continues to expand his sound. Slaraffenland is a Danish ensemble with many multi-instrumentalists. I picked this up through emusic before it was released as a CD. I really liked it, played a track and promptly forgot about it. But every time a track came up on shuffle, it would catch my attention. This track really hit me hard a couple of weeks ago and here it is again with the kind permission of the band. I really love the Kilimanjaro DarkJazz Ensemble CD. When I saw that they had released a drone based CD as the Mt. Fuji DoomJazz Corporation, I had to pick it up. The CD is made up of pieces that are long expansive and drone based and is really great if you like drone based stuff. The KDJE folk let me know production of the new CD is well under way and it is the CD I am looking forward to most this year. |
