This episode kicks off with some distorted lofi pop from Sic Alps. They are a name I have heard around for a while, but mostly connected to out of print EPs and collections. When I heard that a compilation of all the EPs, 7"s and B-sides was coming out, I picked it up and was fairly impressed. They have a good sound and it's a good way to kick off the show.
Phillip Jeck is fairly legendary in the turntablist crowd. He also has a reputation for working with burned out turntables and thriftstore records to make a noisy soundscape. This new CD, Sand, is as good as anything as he has done and legendary label Touch was good enough to let me play it. Tobacco is one of the mysterious faces behind the amazing Black Moth Super Rainbow. He put out a DVD of videos falled Fucked Up Friends that combines some amazing video work with some solo work from Tobacco. Let me just take this moment to say ripping audio from a DVD is way harder than it should be, even one without CSS. This is a great track and I love to play BMSR related stuff. They are an amazing collective. Njiqahdda is an amazingly strange deconstructionist metal act. They are indie and can be and combine some very Kraut-like tendencies and a Black Metal aesthetic. The CD I have by them is really good and they are in a really unique niche, even within the niche of metal deconstruction. The flashback track of the week is Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood's barbit-country classic "Some Velvet Morning." I don't have permission to play it, but I feel the need to. It sort of summed up the retro aesthetic that I was going for, reverby and campy. Ramses III is a really interesting act with fairly standard instrumentation that they use to weave a really dense and non-standard sound. The new CD messes it up even further by including a CD of remixes, including this noisy deconstruction my Astral Social Club's Neil Campbell. Lovely droney noise. Tzolk'in is a collaboration between Empusae and Flint Glass and everything has a Mayan theme. Really textured electronics drones and beats adding up to something really great. This track is my favorite on the CD. The flashback track a few episodes ago was a Paavoharju track and this track is from their new CD. They are by far my favorite Finnish electro acoustic Christian band, and I do know of more than one. I love the sounds these guys generate and the new CD, while not as instantly gripping as the first one, if very strong and grows on me with every listen. The Black Dog is one of those electro acts I have been familiar with for a long time. They have been releasing music for over 15 years and their new CD Radio Scarecrow is really excellent. It makes me want to dig back through their old catalog. I know next to nothing about Burial Hex, but after hearing the tracks on their MySpace, I had to go looking for some of thier CDs. Absolutely amazing dense horror soundtrack sort of stuff. Yet another band with a billion releases to dig through. |
